What Is a Nurse Practitioner & Why I Started a Practice

Dear Reader,

My name is Mistie and I am a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner! I have worked in healthcare for over 13 years and have seen a trend that I would like to put a stop to. That is why I decided to start my practice and made it my mission to nurture the human spirit by creating an individualized, holistic and cutting-edge approach to wellness and aesthetics. I do treat both men and women in my clinic but decided to call my blog “Her Spot” because I would like to focus on women’s wellness as well as provide education on services that I bring into my practice and why I feel they are worth the investment.

I always get this question: What is a Nurse Practitioner? A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Nurse that has a Master’s Degree or higher in a designated specialty. They are also called Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. NP’s must also become board certified after graduation in their specialty and do continuing education to remain certified. NP’s are healthcare providers that can do many of the same duties as a physician. These duties include assessing, diagnosing, and treating common health conditions. NP’s can prescribe medications and provide education as well.

Now that you know what an NP is, let’s talk about why I started my practice. Healthcare has changed drastically over the last decade! Science is getting better; healing time is faster, and diseases that were once death sentences are now being cured. But with the good comes the bad as well.  Healthcare is becoming a corporate machine that revolves around money.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I know money is a part of every business, but respecting employees and valuing patients should be the top priority.

I feel that everyone should be treated with kindness and respect, not as a number.  Valuing patients is an important part of healthcare that has been lost, in my opinion, and is contributing to burnout. Appointment times keep getting shorter so the time to educate and coach our patients on better health outcomes and preventing diseases has been lost. I want to help people understand how to feel good from the inside out. That is why I decided to combine my aesthetic practice with all things wellness.

This week we talked about why I started my practice and what a nurse practitioner can do to help you with your wellness and aesthetics journey. We also talked about my mission to nurture the human spirit by creating an individualized, holistic and cutting-edge approach to wellness and aesthetics. Join me for my next blog “Procedure Spot Light: PHYSIQ” where I will talk about what the Physiq is and why it is not just for body contouring.  I hope you have a wonderful week and remember to take time for yourself every day and drink plenty of water!
